As the use and effectiveness of Alternative medicinal practices and procedures in the medical field is increasingly recognized and accepted amongst healthcare providers, Therma-med inc. stays at the forefront of this industry by providing specialized alternative procedures and medical support services to all patients.

Amongst these alternative procedures and services, Therma-Med Inc. specializes in clinical Thermography, also known as Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), which is a procedure based on the structured analysis of skin and tissue temperatures. It is an adjunctive diagnostic procedure that allows practitioners to see where there is abnormal physiological activity in body tissue. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses Infrared and state of the art software to produce an image which is evaluated for signs of possible disease or injury. Extensive research and investigation performed at prestigious medical institutions have established normal values for the distribution of heat in each region of the body. Variations from these normal values are measured and correlated with suspected injuries or diseases providing an early risk assessment and the opportunity for proper treatment as a preventative measure.

Although there are various medical conditions that can be brought to light using DITI, Breast Thermography stands in the forefront as awareness towards the prevention of breast cancer increases amongst women of all ages. Breast thermography is an assessment tool used extensively as a first-line screening procedure to monitor breast health. Digital infrared cameras detect abnormal changes in blood circulation, which develop in order to feed solid-mass cancer tumors.

It is evident that patients, who take advantage of various available alternative practices such as the Thermal imaging technology screening procedure, will significantly increase their probability of detecting and treating a variety of afflictions and injuries on a preventative level, before they become a more serious condition.

THERMAL IMAGING

As the use and effectiveness of Thermography in the medical field is increasingly recognized and accepted amongst healthcare providers, Therma-med inc. stays at the forefront of clinical imaging superiority by utilizing a purely medical based imaging system which has been tuned and calibrated to specifically address the most inconspicuous physiological discrepancies in the human body.

Because the technology is so reliable, medical thermal imaging's overwhelming value is the ability to reveal the earliest possible indication of abnormal metabolic and functional activity that inherently reveals itself as temperature variations on the surface of the body. It is often so early that currently utilized anatomical testing like x-rays and MRI's cannot detect microscopic or pre-clinical conditions that are evident on the thermographic image.

Therma-med Inc. utilizes thermal imaging systems that incorporate state-of-the-art infrared technologies and proprietary software to accurately and cost-effectively measure physiological changes in the human body allowing patients of all walks of life access to a proactive form of maintaining good health and quality of life through early detection and prevention.

Why a Thermography scan?

  1. Non invasive

  2. No radiation

  3. Painless

  4. No contact with the body

  5. F.D.A approved

THERMOGRAPHY FOR BREAST SCREENING

A Thermography examination can reveal the blood supply that feeds a tumor in its microscopic infancy, and the only way to possibly detect it in that stage is to establish a thermographic baseline and monitor every year for the real early signs. Most doctors agree and even tell their breast cancer patients that a growth may have been there for 8 or 10 years.

Breast thermography is a complement to mammography, not a replacement for it.
In light of these findings, Mammograms are a good tool for determining the exact location of a developed tumor, but it is not an early warning system.

If Thermography can forewarn women of breast health problems up to 8 years before symptoms may be visible, then why not take advantage of this essential examination tool and make it a key part of you're your yearly physical examination.

UPPER BODY SCANS

A thermography scan of the upper body can reveal details of physiological changes in regions such as:

  • Sinus conditions

  • Dental pathology

  • Cardio vascular disease

  • Thyroid dysfunction

FULL BODY or LOWER BODY SCANS

A full body or lower body scan can focus and reveal physiological abnormal activity that could prompt further testing in areas such as:

Abdominal, bladder, gynecological and lower back areas

Scan could shed light on musculoskeletal stress symptoms such as muscle spasm, pinched nerve, hairline fractures, inflammatory conditions and much more THERMA MED INC. is backed by Medical doctors and experts who are qualified to interpret the results of your Thermography scan and will refer further examination as required to address any issue that may come to the surface after your Thermography exam.

Thermography is not a stand alone diagnostic device and does not replace any other diagnostic device or examination, and is therefore used as an adjunctive screening tool with other such devices and examinations.

Studies

Studies show that:

  1. An abnormal infrared image is the single-most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer.

  2. A persistent abnormal thermo-gram carries with it a 22 times higher risk of future breast cancer.

  3. When thermography is added to a woman's regular breast health checkup, a 61% increase in survival rate has been realized.

  4. Finally, when used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography), 95% of early-stage cancers will be detected.

Read on for example visuals of patient scans which undoubtedly indicate the benefit of Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging as an adjunctive diagnostic tool. Also click on links to view additional case studies and references.

EXAMPLE 1:

Good thermal symmetry with no suspicious vascular patterns or significant thermal findings.

The very significant vascular activity in the left breast justified clinical correlation and close monitoring which returned an opinion of fibrocystic changes taking place. These changes can be monitored thermographically at regular intervals until a stable baseline is established and is reliable enough for annual comparison.

EXAMPLE 2:

It takes years for a tumor to grow, and the earliest possible indication of abnormality is needed to allow for the earliest possible treatment and intervention.

This patient was age 37 when her first baseline thermogram showed a slight hyperthermic asymmetry in the upper right breast. The follow-up study showed the pattern had become more well defined and although clinical correlation did not find anything remarkable it was decided to repeat the exam again in a further 3 months, when again significant changes were seen. Mammography was performed at this stage with the thermographic guidance of the locally suspicious area at 1 O'clock to the right nipple. The mammographic findings were inconclusive and the patient was referred for a repeat mammogram in 12 months. Thermographic monitoring was continued and at the fifth comparative study at 12 months significant changes were still evident and the hyperthermic asymmetry (temperature differentials) had increased.

Immediate further investigation was strongly recommended despite a scheduled mammogram in 6 months, and at the patients insistence a repeat mammogram was performed which clearly showed a small calcification (1 mm) at 1 O'clock. Within one week a lumpectomy had been performed with good margins and the pathology confirmed as a malignant carcinoma (DCIS).

This patient has now had stable thermograms for the last 2 years and is expected to remain healthy.

FAQ's

Is Breast Thermography Safe?
Yes, it has been approved by the FDA for over 20 years in the United States and has been used there and in Europe and around the world. Thermography is a non-invasive test. Nothing is introduced to the patients body. It is just like taking a picture. It simply is creating an image of your breasts by measuring your heat. There is no contact of any kind therefore no pain, and no radiation is emitted from the device.

Can thermography diagnose breast cancer?
Thermography, like mammography and other tests is a screening tool. Thermography identifies abnormal physiological changes in your breasts that may be cancerous. Mammography, a type of x-ray, identifies certain structures in the breast that can potentially be cancer. With both Mammography and Thermography, definitive diagnosis is done by other procedures such as a biopsy or lumpectomy. The more information the patient has in regards to the possible ailment, the better a decision can be made in regards to treatment.

Is Breast Thermography covered by Government provided medical insurance?
Most Government provided medical insurance does not cover the cost of Thermography, although some private insurance companies may re-inburse for the procedure.

Are there any know studies that indicate the effectiveness and accuracy of clinical Thermography?
Yes, hundreds of studies have been written up in medical journals.
For further information, please go to: http://www.iact-org.org/articles/articles-review-btherm.html

Do I need a referral from my family physician?
No, a referral is not necessary

How long does the entire Thermography exam take?
The scan, including the time to acclimate to the room will take 20 to 30 minutes. The follow-up consultation at a later date will take about 20 minutes

I have breast implants - is thermography safe?
Yes. Breast implants do not interfere with thermography. Breast Thermography is painless and safe, using no radiation or compression. It can be used effectively and safely for all women including pregnant or nursing women, women with dense breast tissue, and women with breast implants.

Does Thermography replace Mammography?
It is recommended that thermography be used together with mammography as an adjunct diagnostic tool. The combination of both methods of analysis will offer the most comprehensive screening and the earliest possible detection.

AT THE CLINIC

THE FOLLOWING IS A BREAKDOWN OF WHAT WILL TAKE PLACE WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE CLINIC FOR YOUR THERMOGRAPHY APPOINTMENT.

PRE-EXAMINATION INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions must be followed in order for the exam to yield valid, accurate results

  1. Do not wear restrictive clothing such as a bra to the exam.

  2. Tie your hair up and do not wear jewelry around the neck area (just for the imaging).

  3. No prolonged sun exposure (especially sunburn) to the breasts 5 days prior to your exam.

  4. No use of lotions, creams, powders, or makeup on the breasts the day of the exam.

  5. No use of deodorants or antiperspirants the day of your exam.

  6. No physical stimulation (sexual or otherwise) or treatment of the breasts for 24 hours before the exam.

  7. No exercise 4 hours prior to your exam.

  8. No shaving on the day of the exam to avoid skin abrasions.

  9. If bathing, it must be no closer than 1 hour before the exam.

  10. If you are nursing, please try to nurse as far from 1 hour before the exam as possible.

  11. No smoking at least 1 hour before imaging

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING EXAMINATION

Your initial appointment will take approximately 30 minutes.
You will complete a questionnaire - and a detailed health history.
You will then be taken to a private temperature controlled room where you will remain and become acclimated to the temperature of the room.

After 15 minutes, the technician will take a series of images including front, lateral, and oblique views.
You may be asked to plunge your hands into ice water for 60 seconds. This is known as a stress test - the shock of the cold water will cause normal blood vessels to contract and cool down while blood vessels feeding abnormal cells will not. The technician will then repeat the process of taking the images for a before and after view.
The image taking itself only takes a couple of minutes.

At this point a follow up appointment will be scheduled in order to have the results presented to you in person.
A copy of your actual scan results will be on hand, you will learn about any potential issues you may have, and be given advice on how to improve your health and prevent breast disease. This follow up appointment is free of charge.

HISTORY OF INFRARED THERMAL IMAGING

The technology began developing as far back as WWII. As with many new technologies, IR Imaging began in the labs of our nation's military. As benefits beyond the military theater were beginning to be realized, thermal imaging sparked the imagination and hopes of medical professionals around the globe. Eventually, as the technology became readily available and cost effective, it naturally began appearing within the private sector

MAMMOGRAPHY

Mammography has been the state-of-the-art screening test for several decades. However, considerable controversy remains regarding its value, particularly in women under the age of 50. Results from recent studies document that the overall ability of mammograms to detect cancer is only 70 percent. This means that 30 percent of mammograms found to be negative for potentially cancerous lesions are actually positive. There is also a substantial number of false-positive results. The combined false-positive rate was determined to be as high as 89 percent. Identifying and performing biopsies on these clinically insignificant lesions represents over diagnosis and over treatment. Further, the physical and psychological stress associated with mammogram findings is not a small concern nor are the additional costs.

The most devastating loss of life from breast cancer occurs between the ages of 30 to 50. Fortunately, women today have more options available to them to help in the detection of breast cancer than in past decades, thermal imaging. The education and awareness of this option and its effectiveness in detecting breast cancer at different stages in life is vitally important. Going beyond mammography, and exploring this highly-advanced detection tool for breast cancer can make the ultimate difference in women's lives.

THERMAL INFRARED TECHNOLOGY

Currently there are several methods being used in medical infrared imaging. They are as follows:

  1. static

  2. dynamic (DAT, subtraction, etc.)

  3. multispectral and hyperspectral

  4. multimodality

  5. sensor fusion

  6. infrared regulation imaging (IRI)

They are being used in a variety of applications including: oncology, pain, vascular disorders, arthritis, rheumatism, surgery, tissue viability (burns, etc.), dermatological disorders, monitoring the efficacy of therapeutic drugs, etc., and sports medicine. In other words, IR imaging has brought a whole new perspective to the medical field.

For a better understanding of this particular imaging technology, they can refer to the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, volume 21, number 6, issue November/December 2002. Essentially, the article reviews the advancement of IR imaging from military applications to new methods of research in medical infrared imaging. The article entitled "From Tanks to Tumors: A workshop on the application of IR Imaging and Automatic Target Recognition Image Processing for Early Detection of Breast Cancer", is one of hundreds outlining the benefits of thermal imaging in cancer patients. The result will be a new tool in the war against breast cancer and other serious conditions.
"Several studies have shown that infrared imaging is a viable, and perhaps a better method for risk assessment in breast cancer".

The International Academy of Clinical Thermography has provided us a summary list of informational text regarding the benefits of breast thermography.

  1. In 1982, the FDA approved breast thermography as an adjunctive diagnostic breast cancer screening procedure.

  2. A database comprising of over 300,000 women have been compiled from over 800 peer reviewed studies.

  3. Some of these studies have followed patients for up to 12 years.

  4. An abnormal thermo-gram is 10 times more significant as a future risk indicator for breast cancer than a first order family history of the disease.

  5. An abnormal infrared image is the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer.

  6. IR imaging when used as part of a multimodal approach(clinical examination + mammography + thermography) will yield an amazing 95% detection rate of early stage cancers.

It has been concluded by the Academy that "considering the contribution that thermography has demonstrated thus far in the field of early cancer detection, all possibilities should be considered for promoting further technical, biological, and clinical research in this procedure".

Although they have been focused on cancer detection, they must remember that thermal imaging has a wide range of uses including injury detection within the field of sports medicine, chronic pain detection, as well as viral detection to name just a few.

Dr. Charles E. Wexler has perhaps best summarized the cost containment of using thermography as an adjunctive diagnostic tool.

  1. Objectively documents the absence of sensory nerve damage, or soft tissue injury, in general; or documents the presence of it for evaluation and future comparison - even in the absence of neurological deficit.

  2. Shortens hospital stays by hastening a valid diagnosis.

  3. Avoids more expensive, risky and invasive procedures.

  4. Sets a post-operative baseline for future comparison.

Hence, it becomes evident that medical practitioners who have access to the technology of imaging will significantly increase their ability to detect and treat a variety of afflictions and injuries on a preventative level, before they become a more serious condition.
